Nvidia Expands AI and Quantum Footprint with RIKEN’s New Supercomputing Systems
Japan's premier research institute RIKEN is deploying two cutting-edge systems powered by Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs, marking a significant leap in hybrid computing infrastructure. The 1,600-GPU cluster will accelerate breakthroughs in life sciences and climate modeling while pioneering AI-classical computing fusion. A separate 540-GPU installation targets quantum-classical hybrid algorithms, positioning Japan at the forefront of next-generation computational research.
These systems serve as precursors to the ambitious FugakuNEXT initiative—a Fujitsu-Nvidia collaboration developing Japan's future exascale supercomputer. The architecture combines Fujitsu's Monaka X CPUs with Nvidia hardware via high-speed interconnects, creating a testbed for revolutionary AI-quantum workflows.
